Question: "my grandmother suffers from advanced dementia. My mom is the main person in the family, taking care of it. Recently she was truly exhausted and discouraged. Then one day I overheard her talking to my dad about taking Reiki practitioner "my grandmother". I understand that this is some ancient form of healing. It is set to make at least a few sessions. It should help with anxiety and strange behavior, it sometimes gets, my grandmother. I was very skeptical, but I haven't seen much elated months my mom. Should I share my doubts? It's only a matter of time before she asked me my opinion. Have you ever seen helped these patients? We should do? Dangerous? I really appreciate your advice.

Answer: after all these years, it never ceases to amaze me how we can still find intriguing topics for discussion. I will try to share with you my perspective, Reiki and other alternative approaches to medicine. If practices such as Reiki and acupuncture are executed in conjunction with primary health care, they are called complementary medicine. Many hospitals and even the national institutes of health have additional alternative medicine institutes and practitioners.
Now forgive skeptic in me, but I tend to believe in only two kinds of Medicine: proven and unproven. Proven tools testing strictly in strict blinded studies as free of bias as possible. Reports of healings, feedback very famous people (think Oprah Winfrey!) are the only ones. They do not represent a truth beyond the individual experience. Given that half of what I do every day in my Office has never been proved true, one must remain open about these things. However, I believe that the success of Reiki in yet another example of power are placebo medicine.
Yes, I know half of you are upset with me already and the other half is getting there. Before you stop reading, however, consider that Reiki and what, if any, are the risks of using Reiki and other forms of alternative medicine.
According to Wikipedia, Reiki is a spiritual practice, developed in 1922 by Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist. It uses a technique called palm healing to transmit Energy Healing a sick person. This is all assuming that the universe is permeated by invisible forms of energy, "qi", and that we are all connected through it somehow. Reiki therapists channel this energy lightly touching or almost touching human, they want to help. It has been suggested that by doing so, the "energy balance", "restored" because of illness, in accordance with this philosophy is secondary energy distort.
The founder of this movement acquired its ability to teach others how to send energy through its many days of fasting, meditation and chanting. Obviously, he has taught more than 2000 students, with only 16 of them achieve a high level of skills of Reiki. Usui died of a stroke in 1926.
From an early age, Reiki practitioners for five basic principles they call commandments. The first two are the secret art of inviting happiness, then wonderful medicine for all diseases. Next is the third one relating to everyday practice. He asked the Reiki student not to be angry, don't worry, be thankful, diligent and be kind to people everyday (sounds like a pretty good mantra for all of us).
Four requests for meditation, using hand every morning and evening. The latter defines the purpose of Reiki--to improve mind and body. The two main branches are traditional Japanese Reiki and Western. Best was for me to describe the difference between them is to say that they are in the hands of those practices are applied, they wanted the body to heal. Outside of Japan teaching Reiki is usually divided into three tiers: who can heal themselves and others through the ability to channel energy is not physically present, until the last level of a master of Reiki, can train others.
In 2008, a systematic review of the quality of nine randomized clinical trials, assessing the effectiveness of Reiki came to the conclusion that they have not been shown to have any additional benefit over placebo. In General, the quality of the evidence was poor due to the small number of patients involved in each study and develop methods for realistic problems with placebo. In March 2009, the Committee on doctrine of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a decree (guidelines for assessing Reiki as an alternative therapy), end the practice of Reiki Catholic is used by some Catholic retreat centres and hospitals.
Does Reiki? Also it can give people a sense of hope and family or for an entity. It can improve symptoms through self-suggestion and belief. There are countless messages from people who think that it would be useful for them. In this sense, it can be helpful. It also gives families a sense of regaining control, especially in situations where the main medicine seems to have no or very limited treatment responses (dementia).
There are two main issues with using Reiki. One is the cost, and it is not trivial in present conditions, tight budgets and expensive medications. The other is moving away or completely above regular established methods of conventional medicine. Although Reiki practitioners call abandoned "conventional" medicine for some conditions like cancer patients will sometimes choose to make. In connection with your grandmother's session could be useful, relaxing, and your MOM. No brain, however, will continue his fight, so I would like to encourage work with doctor who deals with your grandma dementia.
You can also try to think of other ways to help your MOM. Maybe you and your father can split into and, for example, buy her a monthly subscription massage. Best of luck.
