ASHEVILLE — the only acupuncturist in the town worked in secret in 1985, the year CISSY Majebe moved here in the practice of Chinese medicine.

Back when people heard of acupuncture, they thought it was witchcraft, she said. I'd never thought I'd be sitting here practicing with seven other acupuncturists and become President of the college.

Today Majebe is one of at least 50 acupuncturists in Asheville. She helped open the Daoist tradition Chinese medical Arts College in 2003, across the street from its Chinese Acupuncture and Herbology clinic in Montford.

People from all over the country now visit Asheville in herbal medicine and massage schools, economic development groups want to contribute, along with an abundance of city practitioners of alternative medicine.

New jobs may open as hospitals and physician offices to begin to accept alternative methods of treatment.

My impression is that there's plenty for all, and how people opportunities to take better care of themselves, they will find many of these additional methods, said Lourdes Lorenz, Director of the mission hospitals in integrative medicine.

Managing Director David Brown said the area has a high concentration of Western and alternative health care providers and health industry is one of the few areas had increased during the recession.

If you put all these things together, you conclude that Asheville might have a competitive advantage in the development of integrated health, Brown said. We have something unique in the Southeast region.

For the region and even the number of alternative practitioners and facilities for the study of alternative medicine in Asheville is highlighted.

Asheville is one of only two acupuncture colleges in North Carolina and boasts three schools of herbal medicine and massage, a number of schools.

Asheville Buncombe technical college and Southwest Community College have programmes of alternative medicine.

Mission hospitals in the region's largest health system, began a program of integrative medicine in 2008, and it grows into one of the largest in the State.

Brown said the region's history as, a good place for small businesses and people who value quality of life of all helped grow the industry.

Majebe acupuncture also said no longer a foreign Word.

IT's changed for patients, she said. People use complementary medicine for their primary health care. They've made this choice.

While demand for alternative medicine has grown since Majebe opened its practice 26 years ago, some practitioners, starting today for the different obstacle: Setting yourself apart.

Dr. Jennifer sales opened at WNC chiropractic Hendersonville road in September 2009. There are at least 20 chiropractic on the road to South Asheville.

There's another chiropractor that if I throw a stone, I'll hit him, said sales. But, we both have a thriving business. We're just a little different, kind of like hairdressers.

I think you should have something special about you at this time, she said. I don't think you can be a run-of-the-mill chiropractor.

For some practitioners, this means with specialty, how to handle certain types of patients or the practice group.

Nancy Hyton and five other practitioners for holistic medicine Center opened three years ago. The Centre has an acupuncturist, massage therapists, licensed professional counselor and harmony and-osteopathic physicians.

Hyton said model group can be easier than working alone and offers patients, something else.

Jesamine Mello moved to Asheville and two years ago and Yoga practices. Its Web site, and the word into his mouth helped her gradually build your business. Instead of having to compete with other practitioners, Mello, rental of premises for them.

I think that there is always room for more, she said. I do not entertain the thought that there should be more massage therapists in this city. I think there's a lot of people who go around. It just takes time. You need to be committed.

Other Students look after seeing patients.

Most of the graduates of the school of holistic Herbalism Appalachian mountains end up using their knowledge to their own line of body care products or herbal medicines, rather than become a practitioner, said Foley, owner of Ceará.

She said, although it can be difficult to make a living as a herbalist, a field, it is growing.

IT is also right livelihood, said Foley. IT-then you can feel good about doing.

In the area said, maybe even more opportunities for those interested in alternative medicine as mission hospital grows its program integrative medicine by practitioners for their employees.

The program can also lead to more physicians, referring additional specialists and patients patients find it themselves.

Brown, Center, says, can also be a growth business that supports practitioners, including equipment for massage therapists and laboratory testing for natural products.

The field can also be used on medical tourism market.

This work will contribute to Marek Sawicki massage therapy students in A-B Tech.
