Identified a critical need patient guidance in navigating Online type 2 ... -PR Newswire (press release)

JACKSONVILLE, Florida and DEERFIELD, ill., March 22, 2010/PRNewswire/--according to a recent discussion among the members of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) and key opinion leaders, the confusion of diabetes care information on the Internet – some of them inaccurate or even erroneous – makes it difficult for patients and caregivers to find reliable information related to type 2 diabetes. As a result, AACE has announced, with the support of Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc. (Takeda), the future creation of an online resource, analysed and evaluated by medical experts. The tool will be available later this year.

"Inaccurate or incomplete Information can lead to unnecessary stress or confusion between patients with type 2 diabetes," said George Grunberger, M.D., founder and President, Diabetes Institute Grunberger, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and Board member of AACE. "With the growing number of Americans living with type 2 diabetes and with so many features already available, we need to make it easier for healthcare professionals, patients and health professionals access resources respectable and reliable basis for decisions on treatment and care."

Recent statistics show that more than 79 percent of adults in the United States (USA) are online, of which almost 90% use the Internet to find health information. With approximately 26 million people with diabetes, including 90-95% with type 2 diabetes, this population of patients and their caregivers represent a large group of people seeking health information online. Still, research suggests that less than 20 per cent of resources for diabetes online contain reliable information specific to the type 2 diabetes.

AACE and Takeda will offer a compendium of existing, trusted resources specific for type 2 diabetes, divided into different categories (e.g. Management, lifestyle and tools) and reviewed by experts, to help health care professionals: a guide for patients and health professionals as they try to end the disorder of the many features available.

The AACE partnership with Takeda responds to the needs of health professionals, caregivers and patients with diabetes. This comprehensive resource will help people browsing the Internet and find useful and reliable online information relevant to them, "said Lawrence blonde, M.D., Director, Ochsner Diabetes Clinical Research Unit at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana and former member of the Board of Directors of AACE. "Auto-diabetes care is an essential component of diabetes management. In addition to diabetes self-management education team of health care, access to other educational resources specific to your needs, you can help empower patients to actively and effectively participate in their care. "
