Ancient Chinese herbal remedies can treat modern diseases-Medill Reports: Chicago

Yang Jian Qiang, or young Kent, is a co-owner of Kent young Medicine Centre & co. in Chicago's Chinatown.

Kent young Medicine Centre & co. in Chicago's Chinatown sells more than 400 herbs for a range of diseases. These include colds, nausea and digestive problems, urinary tract infection, high blood pressure and cancer, said Yang Jian Qiang, licensed acupuncturist and co-owner of the store.

Yang, who also goes by the name Kent young graduated from Zhongshan Medical College in China. He practiced acupuncture and herbs studied there before coming to America, in 1994. To become a licensed practitioner of acupuncture in the United States, he studied for three years and passed the test, administered by the National Certification Commission for acupuncture and Oriental medicine.

Now license the practice of acupuncture in the State of Illinois, he opened his own shop at Wentworth s. 2400 in 2000.

Some of his clients are buying their own herbs, but others come to diagnose it and get herbal compounds, especially for them. Chinese method of diagnosis involves a person's pulse and looking at the color of his or her language.

Chinese herbs are usually drunk as tea, but can also be eaten in soups or used topically. For example with some herbal compounds you boil herbs and soak the affected body part in a liquid, said Jan.

Many Americans take herbs in the form of tablets or powder, because Chinese herbs often taste bitter or sour cream. But Yang explained that the taste of herbs is due to its use in the body. For example, he said that people with excess heat in their body should adopt the bitter herbs. Sweet herbs give you more energy. Sour herbs help you sleep better, "he said.

The Chinese believe the herbs work like acupuncture, which deals with the flow of energy, or Qi in the body. For example, Jan said, people are using ginseng popular herbal remedies to improve their energy because it facilitates the flow of energy.

Yang said that Western medicine uses chemicals that are very strong and can cause side effects. Chinese herbs don't cause more side effects, "he said. They help strengthen the immune system and the balance between different parts of the body.

Yang said Western doctors often advise patients for medicinal herbs. National Center for complementary and alternative medicine-part of the national institutes of Health reported that in 2007, 17 percent of adults use natural products, including herbs.

Dr. Chun-Su Yuan Tan, Director of the center of the University of Chicago Medical Center for herbal medicine research, said that although Chinese herbal antibiotics are used in China for thousands of years, there is limited use of herbs in the United States, about 80% of herbs used by Americans of European descent. Yuan said people should consider using Chinese herbs more "esli"kitajskij (herbal medicine) can show the real benefits of controlled clinical studies. But there is at present limited evidence from these studies.

According to the National Center for complementary and alternative medicine were studied Chinese herbs-mainly in China, for its use in many conditions. There is evidence that the herbs could help with some conditions, but the techniques used in most studies were flawed. More research is needed to make additional findings.

Some Chinese Herbalists are experienced and knowledgeable, "said Yuan. But overall, the level of knowledge is not the same thing among Herbalists, practicing in this country, because there is no standardized examination for specialists in Chinese herbs. He advises patients to their doctors, in considering whether to use herbs.

National Center for complementary and alternative medicine advises search medical professional in herbs rather than self-treat with herbs. People should not use traditional Chinese medicine, including herbs and acupuncture as a replacement for conventional medicine. The Agency encourages consumers to interact with health care providers about any alternative remedies to ensure a coordinated and safe care.
