Girl Scout cookies are developed, but it should still read the nutrition label-plain dealer

PD-fileIf you use counting calories and worry about fats, Trefoils are the best option.

Claim that the first harbinger of spring is not a robin, but when I'm the Girl Scouts sell cookies to set up a table in my local food business.

These cookies you have changed the time they debuted in 1917--the Organization for security and cooperation in Europe, only five years, the Museum was founded by Juliette Gordon low.

First, it was mothers, Girl Scouts, their daughters-perhaps with the help of their home-baked cookies in the kitchens and ovens. The Girl Scout cookie at the end of the first type was personified: sugar cookie made from the usual ingredients: butter, sugar, eggs, flour, vanilla, milk and baking powder.

People across them, as they are fresh baked goods, and sell cookies to assist with the financing of the activities of the forces was born.

in 1933, the world was becoming more and more commercial, and the girl scouts were so. Troops in the city of Philadelphia began baking storefront Windows in the gas and electricity to the back of the cookies in the ordinary course of business, and they sold out, too. In 1935, the Girl Scouts of greater New York City bought the die Trefoil-shape, which remains today in the shape of Trefoils, shortbread, of the Charter of fundamental rights.

The following year, the Girl Scouts, the national headquarters of the commercial licensing system began, baker process.

Concentration camps have been a little blip, sugar, flour and butter shortages forced the Girl Scouts to go to the sale of calendars instead of cookies, but by 1948, 29, of which the whole country was in a commercial license do the Girl Scout cookies.

Midcentury, which became the four varieties of cookies: a cookie, vanilla, based on the fill in the cocoa powder filled cookie, chocolate mint, and shortbread.

Today, the cookies are made by two of the big, Little Brownie the Division which is owned by Keebler, Kellogg n; and the ABC, a subsidiary of Interbake with food.

The forces needed to sell three types of cookies: thin mints, peanut butter Sandwich cookies and shortbread Trefoils. Other varieties can be changed each year off and later choices included the Dulce de Leche, lemonades and Colas (shortbread cookies with lemon icing).

From the perspective of the nutritional changes, too. Until 2005 the cookies contained trans fat--for hydrogenated vegetable oils-part-as a commercially baked cookies. When the research began to demonstrate that trans fat was unhealthy, Girl Scouts, their importance should be reported to zero trans FAT per place for recipes. Who really mean "zero" by the way, because in part for hydrogenated vegetable oils have yet another ingredient in the Samoas, for example, and can still be found in a long list of ingredients from more cookies.

If this does not apply to you, plain Trefoil is the best option.

Now, of course, we all know that cookies are a treat, and at any time in the second half of the box (sleeve of cookies is not one place), eat well, is not a great choice.

But the candy or a treat is a treat, and depending on what information--carefully of fat grams? sugar? Saturated? --Here are some facts:

• Nutrition facts (or girlscoutcookies.org) you can view the note, that the place varies from 110 to 160 burnt. But the size of the place of the quantity being delivered depends on the cookie. You have five Trefoils 160 calories, but only two chocolate-coconut laced Samoas 140.

• If you are looking for a fat grams, Tagalongs are 9 g of two of the primary purposes of cookies is high.

• If the sugar is the problem, you may be able to note that the Lemon Chalet Cremes 13 grams of sugar in place, only 7 grams of sugar, compared with Trefoils.

In addition, the label information-to provide the long list of ingredients, which contain some of the people's nutritional bugaboos, such as palm oil-for-food offer, through the Exchange also now. For example, place the sugar color deLite is two cookies are 1 of starch carb and fat content option (otherwise, this is also the cookie containing high fructose syrup, corn, which is a residence away from the list).

You may be able to now, worry about these. You can avoid all the discussed processes or can-seasonal work incorrect. Or you may be able to pass at all.

But you can't say anymore that you do not know what are "cookies"-much more than the seven ingredients that Girl Scout I think mothers are used to do in 1917.

It is the American way. Girl Scout cookies only reflect it.

Lap-Band Surgery marred by problems after 12 years-Los Angeles Times

A patient is ready for banding surgery, one of several types of bariatric, or weight loss, surgery. (Brian Vander Brug/Los Angeles Times)
NEW YORK (Reuters Health)-an older form of Lap-Band Surgery weight-loss can lead to serious complications over the long haul, Belgian researchers said Monday.

The operation works by placing a silicone band around the upper part of the stomach to limit the intake of food. It Is an increasingly popular option in the fight against obesity, but some experts have concerns about their safety.

The Belgian team found that as much as half of their patients followed for at least 12 years, the band removed during that period. And in more than a quarter, the band had gnawed its way through the wall of the stomach.

"The high failure rate of (Lap-Band Surgery), at least in our hands, its future may harm further widespread use as a restrictive weight loss surgery," write Dr. Jacques Himpens of the Saint Pierre University Hospital in Brussels and colleagues in the archives of surgery.

"This is what I was worried about," said Dr. Mary Brandt, which is at the head of the pediatric surgical program in Texas children's Hospital in Houston and the Lap-Band Surgery for criticised.

"I think these data to support my opinion that lap-band is not the correct operation for adolescents," she told Reuters Health in an e-mail.

According to Allergan-Irvine, California-based company that the Lap-Band system makes--is its product used in more than 500,000 procedures worldwide. The command more than two-thirds of a market of $ 300 to $ 400 million.

In an email to Reuters Health, Allergan criticism of the new study and said that both the surgical technique and the Lap-Band itself was changed in the meantime.

Also noted that the study was based on only 151 patients from a single hospital, and that the researchers were able to test only half of the patients.

"We are disappointed to see the publication of an ill-built, single-center clinical assessment that does not meet the high clinical standards a should expect from peer-reviewed data, and is not reflective of the clinical standards of today," Cathy TaylorAllergan, the Director of Corporate Communications, said.

Dr. Marc p. Michalsky, surgical Director of the Center for healthy weight and nutrition at nationwide children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, seconded the criticism.

"In some ways that it's a bit of a historical snapshot of this type of surgery 15 years ago," he said. "I would these results with a grain of salt."

On average, patients in the study lost about 43 percent of their excess weight--a number which was overtaken by the gold standard weight loss surgery, called gastric bypass.

Four of every ten patients in the study suffered a major complication of surgery, such as the band going into the stomach or the stomach pouch. Overall, six out of ten patients ended up on the operating table again.

In 2009 had more than 220,000 Americans a kind of weight loss surgery, at a price of about $ 20,000 per patient, according to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

"I don't think there is one operation that is good for everyone," said Michalsky. "It really comes down to a combination of recitals by the surgeon and the patient."
